There are many mind disorders such as anxiety depression mood swings. Good diagnoses will determine which specific type of suffering the patient has. Attacking anxiety and depression symptoms is a hard and long road to go but is totally doable. You and your doctor must identify your type of disorder among stress anxiety depression disorders in order to choose the best therapy for your case.

For more information you can visit Factsheet: Mood Disorders

The term anxiety covers many different types of abnormal and pathological anxieties (emotional state where the cause is not defined) or fears (emotional and physiological response to a recognized external threat). There is a wide variety of stress anxiety depression disorder which affects more than 18 million of Americans. It is a debilitating chronic condition that begins at an early age or after a triggering event. It presents high stress and physiological symptoms.

Emotional Anxiety symptoms

Irrational and excessive fear and worry
Feelings of apprehension or dread
Trouble concentrating
Feeling tense and jumpy
Anticipating the worst
Irritability
Restlessness
Watching for signs of danger
Physical anxiety symptoms
Pounding heart
Sweating
Stomach upset or dizziness
Frequent urination or diarrhea
Shortness of breath
Tremors and twitches
Muscle tension
Headaches
Fatigue
Insomnia

Symptoms of an anxiety attack

Surge of overwhelming panic
Feeling of losing control or going crazy
Heart palpitations or chest pain
Feeling like you’re going to pass out
Trouble breathing or choking sensation
Hyperventilation
Hot flashes or chills
Trembling or shaking
Nausea or stomach cramps
Feeling detached or unreal

Anxiety attack

It happens when a person feels intense panic or fear, they occur suddenly, no previous warning. There can be an obvious trigger or not. There are many people who always uses the stairs because they believe that elevators are dangerous. If you do allow them to use the stairs they will feel safe. This type of people are afraid of elevators. Maybe because elevators are small, closed, without air inside. They can fall or just stop at any moment. Imagine you feel like this about elevators, would you use them? People who suffer from anxiety see the experience as something negative and life threatening, they lose control and sometimes physiological symptoms feel like heart attacks.

Attacking anxiety and depression symptoms is not an easy task, however therapy and medications can make a difference since both alternatives have cured many people around the world. If you suffer from panic attacks visit your doctor, get a diagnose and don’t expose to the things that make you feel stressed until your therapist recommends it. Fight against anxiety depression mood changes here.

Bipolar depression mood involves periods of excitability (mania) alternating with periods of depression. The mood swings between mania and depression can be very abrupt. Bipolarity includes a presence of at least one manic episode, it is a chronic condition, and the average of episodes without medication is of four episodes in ten years. Bipolarity is linked to depression since it is a unique pattern of mood cycles which include many behaviors such as the ones for depression. Once the pattern has been determined, the manic and depression cycles are predictable.

Bipolarity begins in adolescence and in early adulthood. Many studies state that there is a strong genetic influence. Ken Kendlar, a psychiatrist at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, believes that it is a 50 – 50 split between genetics and environment when it comes to developing a mental disorder.

Signs and symptoms of bipolar and manic depression
Mania: A person in the manic phase may feel indestructible, full of energy, and ready for anything. Other times that person may be irritable and ready to argue with anyone who tries to get in the way.
Unrealistic plans
Less sleep and food than needed
A person can stay up all night without accomplishing anything because he or she was easily distracted.
A person may talk very quickly from subject to subject.
Self-esteem may be inflated.
Decisions regarding business and finances are often made hurriedly and without consideration
Clothing choices may also change, brighter clothes.

Depression: mania alternates with depression, however most people have more depressive episodes than manic ones.
Sadness and crying
People who are depressed may not care enough about personal appearance
These people may sleep too much or have difficulty getting to sleep
No interest in food at all or they eat excessively
People with depression have trouble thinking
They withdraw from friends
Depression brings feelings of hopelessness
People who are depressed may not see a point in living anymore and may actually think about ways to kill themselves.

How is the bipolar depression disorder diagnosed?

Bipolar depression disorder is very difficult to diagnose. It can take almost ten years to be diagnosed correctly. The reason is the dual nature of the disorder. When a person is in the manic stage he/she feels good and full of energy so, for them there is no need to seek for medical advice or help. On the contrary, when a person is in the depressive stage they usually seek help but they are often diagnosed with depression and not with bipolarity. Doctors have a test that helps them find the right disorder. The Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ) is used to find bipolar behavior in patients.

What is the best way to treat bipolar and manic depression?

There are many ways to treat this mind disorder. Medication is necessary, however, it won’t work by itself, most people need to combine it with information about the disease, which are the bipolar symptoms, and which are normal behaviors of your personality. Therapy helps along with healthy lifestyles and to really stick to the treatment. This is a lifelong condition and its ups and downs could be devastating. Bipolar depression mood can be treated but it can’t be cured.

Depression mood swings causes haven’t been determined yet since its is a complex topic to group so, researchers have proposed some options like:

Chemical Imbalance: this imbalance happens in the brain. It is when neurotransmitters (the ones in charge of feelings) have an imbalance, for example dopamine, GABA, norepenephrine, serotonin levels are not normal.

Hormonal changes: they happen in women during and after pregnancy and of course during the whole menstrual cycle. In teenagers hormonal changes happen after the introduction of sex hormones. This gets solved when the hormones return to normal.

What are mood swings?

Mood swings are extreme mood changes. It is closely related to mood disorders. Two good examples of it are the classic bipolar disorder and ADHD (hyperactive/inattentive).

What are bipolar mood swings?

Bipolar mood swings are destructive for the patient as well as for relatives and friends. The swings go from depression to manic and vice versa. The patient can go from feeling very sad and down to feel super excited in short periods of time. The moods really affect people around the patient. The worst part is to pick the pieces after each episode. Even if the patient takes his/her medication, bipolar mood swings will happen so the best way to prevent events is by knowing its triggers and by keeping a journal to know how often and how intensive they are.

What is the link or the relation between mood swings and depression?

Mood swings and depression are closely related. They are the faces of the same coin. Depression is a symptom of mood disorder, they are both psychotic and neurotic conditions. Depression is present in people who suffer from mood disorders because just as depression does this type of disorder can lead people to commit suicide so, they both share life threatening episodes. These mind disorders have benefit from electro-convulsive therapy.

Good suggestions on how to control mood swings

Are you wondering if there is a way to control them? You know that bipolarity cannot be cured and even though it can be controlled, there is a possibility to experience some episodes. It is always nice to count with more options to treat your mind condition. You are aware of many things that make you change from one to the other. Maybe music, food or weather can trigger your mood swings. Identify the way you feel and write it down in a journal, try to eat healthy food that won’t leave you feeling extremely empty or even sick. Study the way you react when drinking alcohol, when playing sports, when you are in family gatherings, etc. Remember that your doctor is the only one who can prescribe oral medications. To get the correct diagnose will make things easier because you can shoot directly to the problem, at home, the patient and people who live with this type of disease have a hard task, controlling the depression mood swings causes.

Certain medications, including those for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or irregular heartbeat
Sleep disturbances
Amount of exposure to light
Heredity
Chronic stress (loss, abuse, or deprivation during childhood).
Nutritional deficiencies
Family history of depression
History of mental, physical, or sexual abuse
Current or past alcohol or drug abuse
What is atypical depression?

It is a subtype of Major Depression characterized by mood reactivity being able to experience improved mood in response to positive events. People feel deeply depressed or kind of helpless depending on the latest situation they faced. “Atypical” depression is a very common subtype of all depression cases. Up to 40% of the depressed population may be classified as having this type of depression.

How is atypical any different from any other kind of depression?

Atypical and typical depression are different because typical depression is characterized by a never ending sadness no matter what. Atypical may present ups and downs depending on the event, some studies show that MAOIs medications are more effective for atypical patients and women suffer more from it than men.

Atypical depression symptoms

The DSM-IV mandates at least two of the following: increase in appetite or weight gain (as opposed to the reduced appetite or weight loss of “typical” depression); excessive sleeping (as opposed to insomnia); leaden paralysis; and sensitivity to rejection.
Researches from the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Brown University School of Medicine, Rhode Island Hospital found that: (1) younger age was positively associated with hypersomnia and negatively associated with leaden paralysis, while middle age was positively associated with both hyperphagia and rejection sensitivity; (2) female sex was associated with all of the atypical symptoms except rejection sensitivity; (3) a greater severity of illness was positively associated with leaden paralysis and rejection sensitivity, and negatively associated with mood reactivity; and (4) a duration of illness of greater than 3 months was positively associated with hyperphagia, leaden paralysis, and rejection sensitivity.”

What is the best treatment?

The most common way to treat this type of depression is by using antidepressants. There are still many questions about prescribing MAOIs or newer oral medications, however a psychiatrist will be in charged of giving advice according to physical and psychological evaluations and tests. Many people consider therapy as a good pair along with antidepressants.

The same treatments that works for “typical” depression also works for atypical, but the difference between success and waste of efforts may depend on the ability to communicate to the psychiatrist and therapist. Matters that don’t seem to be very relevant like sleeping, eating or spending free time will make the difference in devising medications and talking therapy sessions that really cause and impact to the patient and his/her atypical depression causes.

Manic depression disorder is what most people know as bipolar disorder. It is called manic and depressive because one person can go from feeling with lots of energy to have no intention to move. It is a disorienting condition depicted by extreme shifts in mood. To understand it a little better imagine a roller coaster, it moves very slow to the top were excitement and adrenaline are waiting in the top, the thing is that after feeling in the “top of the world”, the roller coaster goes down and so the person’s mood. It drops to a relentless depression. The shifts and their intensity vary from one person to another and it is affecting 2% of all the American adults.
How is manic depression caused?

Genetics: it is said that “it runs in the families”, this appear when there are abnormal chromosomes which can be inherited

Abnormal brain activity: it is revealed by doing imaging scans and other tests to the brain

Neurotransmitters: due to an elevated level of vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT2)

Infectious agents like viruses: researchers are still observing how viruses like the Borna virus and the herpes simplex 2 may cause bipolar disorder

Which are the common symptoms of manic depressive patients ?

When talking about symptoms these must be listed in two different categories. One for manic phases and the others for depressive phases. They can appear at the same time but the type of disorder is called Mixed manic depression.

Manic:

Unrealistic plans
Less sleep and food than needed
A person can stay up all night without accomplishing anything because he or she was easily distracted.
A person may talk very quickly from subject to subject
Self-esteem may be inflated
Decisions regarding business and finances are often made hurriedly and without consideration
Clothing choices may also change, brighter clothes

Depressive:

Sadness and crying
People who are depressed may not care enough about personal appearance
These people may sleep too much or have difficulty getting to sleep
No interest in food at all or they eat excessively
People with depression have trouble thinking
They withdraw from friends
Depression brings feelings of hopelessness
People who are depressed may not see a point in living anymore and may actually think about ways to kill themselves.

Which are the best treatments recommended for manic depression test patients?

The best treatment begins once the patient has received the correct diagnosis. After that, there are many things that will help the patient such as medications like “mood stabilizers” and antidepressants. People who suffer from bipolar disorder have trouble with the thyroid so, monitoring it is very important. Besides that, counseling and therapies may help enormously to know the patients personal triggers and will teach him/her to spot the manic depression disorders relapses.
